Such wonderful neighbors and all the fun times we had: building huts, riding bikes, playing Hide & Seek on summer nights, swimming in Pepperell Lake, etc. In the summers I remember often we would meet Daddy at the cafeteria for lunch---I loved their cake with strawberry icing. So many wonderful memories!!!

Comments: I started work at the mill in Sept. 1986 as Air Conditioning Control Tech. , and stayed until Sept.1996. I really enjoyed working in that mill. I saw a lot of changes, new equipment installed, production increased,a safer working place every year.I walked many a mile in that mill and never regretted a footstep I took. I learned a lot there that helped in future jobs. I hated to see it being torn down, but the fire was a kick in the gut that hurt, was the worst thing that could happen to that glorious old building. She was beauty to behold and will be missed forever. I HOPE something will be put there as a memorial to what was really there, a piece of textile history that is missed and can never be replaced. The memorial at East Alabama Museum is terrific! , but I would like to see one at 2401C First Ave , the site of the original and fist PEPPERELL MILL IN ALABAMA.

Comments: My father was a career military man and my grandparents were mill workers which were somewhat like migrant workers often moving from Wetumpka, Dadeville, or other towns that may offer more hours or higher pay. I lived with my grandparents oftimes cause dad was over seas or at a temporary assignment. I went to Morris Snower to start school but then moved to Wetumpka. I went to M. Snower all of the second grade and all of the fifth grade(Ms. Bond). I played football for the mill community center in the fifth grade and again in the seventh grade. The jr. high was in the Old Cliff Hare H.S. by the football field. I left in the latter part of the seventh grade and returned for the second sememster in my nineth grade. As i recall that was in a new high school close to a new national guard. I would have graduated with the class of 1965. I always lived in the West End area.I delivered newspapers in the Pepperille Mill Village while in the 9th grade. I remember way too many great people from my time in Opelika but they are too numerous to list, but I would like to mention Dorothy Brooks, Ray Griffin and Family, and Harry Prine of Salem.

Comments: Lovell Rousseau was also the individual, on October 18, 1867, who received the deed to the Territory of Alaska in a ceremony with Prince Maksoutoff, representative of the Czar, in Sika, Alaska, capital of Russian Alaska. Every year, on October 18, Alaska Day, there is a reenactment of the transfer ceremony and I play the part of General Rousseau. I also spent 3 years in Alabama in the Army assigned to Fort McClellan and have visited Opelika several times. General Rousseau is a common thread that connects various parts of my life in a most unexpected fashion, Thank you for such an excellent article about the raid.

I remember the rock throwing fights with Johnny Moore, Andy Shavers, climbing the trees at Johnnies house. I remember going to the old chemical plant and finding bits of sulfur to burn and the smell. I remember the old stink creek and having to hold your breath at the start of the hill all the way past the creek to get a new breath. Great times thank you for the site.

Comments: Came across this quite by accident and have enjoyed reading much about Opelika. While in the Air Force in 1962 I had the good fortune to become friends with ED MARTIN (from Opelika) and while we were stationed at Greenville AFB Miss I was privileged to spend a couple weekends at his parents home. They were most gracious and kind and introduced me to Ed's cousin, PAULA FLOWERS. We struck up a friendship that lasted by mail as I was transferred to Hawaii. My brother in law, TED VINSON, is likewise from Opelika and after graduating from Auburn came to Fort Mill SC to work for Springs Industries and met and married my sister. Would be great to hear from Ed, Paula, or their families after all these years. Time we spent together was very brief but I was made to feel most welcome in Opelika and I have fond memories.

Comments: On a recent visit to Opelika my wife (Ardine Armistead) visited the East Alabama Museum. We would recommend that to any former residents who visit Opelika. There are many varied exhibits, very well presented. Since I have seen questions about the POW camp, they have a nice exhibit on it, including excellent POW art work; they also have a book for sale on the camp. There is quite a bit there on both the mills, also. They still need lots of contributions for the Pepperell monument they plan to put out front.

Comments: Miss Barnes taught me 11th Grade Plane Geometry. I can attest she still used the term CON-gruent. She always insisted on using the term TO PROVE as a noun. I struggled with the sine/cosine/tan stuff, but PLANE GEOMETRY saved me on the ACT math portion. I drew right out of the memory bank what Miss Barnes put in there.

Comments: This is the first time I have visited the site. My wife Joan had told me about it, but for some reason, I just never got around to visiting it. Boy, am I sorry I waited so long! The funny thing is that I got an email from a facebook friend, Tony Walker, that had the hyperlink to the profile of Ruth Barnes by Winston Smith T. Ms Barnes was a teacher of mine in Opelika High School, so I was very interested in reading the article. That lead me to this site. Thank you Jane for doing this.
