Comments: My ancestors fought in this battle. Captain Joseph Neal, Sr. and his son Ensign Joseph Neal, Jr. served as officers under Colonel John Dooly. Reuben Neal is buried on the site. These Neals' were from Carnesville, Franklin County, Georgia. The Neals operated a trading post on Neal Creek on the north fork of the Broad River in that county. They were awarded bounty land for their service and later their survivors were granted preference in the lottery of land taken from the Cherokee. Three brothers John, Julian and Joseph Neal walked to the Georgia frontier from Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia around 1765. They settled in Franklin County on the north fork of the Broad River and founded a Trading Post. The brothers' father, Nicholas Neal, was born in Devonshire, England in 1704 and indentured to Charlottesville, Virginia as a tailor. Nicholas Neal's Last Will and Testament is Indexed in Albemarle County in 1756. The surname Neal has been misspelled. Likely the spelling Nail is a phonetic misspelling. However, the misspelling may have been intentional or even for other reasons. During the colonial period unpaid indentures of a father were required to be paid by the sons. Neither of the brothers who walked to the Georgia frontier benefitted from the father's Will and neither were entitled to benefit from primogeniture as the oldest son. The ancestors of Joseph followed the road from Franklin County northwest into Cherokee territory and settled in Ranger, Gordon County, Georgia (The county seat is Calhoun.). Joseph R. Neal, Sr. 18 January 2014 kettlecreek1779@gmail.com
